THE "FRIGHTFUL" BLOCKADE

FIFTH MERCHANTMAN , TORPEDOED. (TIMES AND SYDNEY SUN SERVICES.) LONDON, 25th January. The naval correspondent of The Times says that the Durward (a British steamer of 1300 tons) is the fifth, of the Allies' merchantmen to be torpedoed. This does not; mirk the beginning of a new phase of German operations. The desire to carry out Grand Admiral yon Tirpitz's threat (to blockade England by means of submarines) has not been wanting, although up to the present its expression has not been strikingly successful.
