RECRUITING

ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING AT POBT CHALMERS, (BY TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN, 26th January. An enthusiastic recruiting meeting was held at Port Chalmers last night. The Defence Minister (the Hon. J. Allen), referring to the fact that New Zealand had done even more than wa's asked for by the Imperial Government, said the brightest gleam of hope lay in the fact that the demand for 25 per cent, of reinforcements had been reduced by the man who knew more about it than any man on earth— Lord Kitchener. Nevertheless, in artillery at least, New Zealand was going to send 100 per cent, with the next two or three reinforcements. The reduction proposed by Lord Kitchener in the percentages of the reinforcements were 15 per cent, in infantry and 10 per cent, in mounted men. Mr. Allen continued : "Wo want you in New Zealand to supply us every two months with 1800 men. We have sufficient in camp now for the next two lots of reinforcements, and for officers and non-commissioned officers of the third lot, but we want to enrol and register every young man willing to make a sacrifice for the Empire and the flag. We want to have them registered, and we want them to continue their work. The greatest service a young man can render the Empire until called upon to sacrifice his life is to keep up the industries of the country, and maintain the finances to keep it working."
