THE WOOL SALES '♦i ■ ■ PRACTICALLY A COMPLETE CLEARANCE ' BROKERS' REPORTS. One of the most striking features of yesterday's wool sales, apart from the phenomena] prices, was the rarity of the use of the word "pass," signifying that the bid did not reach the reserve. Lot after lot was knocked down there and then at prices possibly to Id beyond many growers' most sanguine ideas as to the price their trool would fetch. The clearance was practically complete, and, no doubt, for what little wool was held over buyers "will be prepared to pay and growers ready to accept prices which the market will support. Brokers' own reports (additional to that of Levin and Co., whose best sales follow immediately) are given in the order of sale: — Levin and Co. (Mr. A. E. Mabin, auctioneer) report their best sales as on account Mr. A. Tocker. Featherston — 4 bales Southdown H^d, 7 bales Romney 13£ d, 5 bales Romney 12fd ; estate C. R. Bannister, auctioneer) describe the sale "as undoubtedly the most successful wool sale ever held in Wellington. Prices were expected to be higher than December sale but the extent of the advance exceeded all anticipations, and with the exception of a few very badly-seeded lots, practically everything was sold in the room, at prices from Id to 2d per 1b in advance of last month's sale. Taken as a whole the general condition of the wool was satisfactory ; in view of the dry weather experienced there was less seed than was anticipated, and the wool was fairly dry and light in condition. The greatest advance was felt in medium and coarse crossbred wools, which rose fully from l£d to 2d per lb. Superior wools advanced l^d to l^d ; inferior crossbred, Id to l|d per lb. Lambs' w<jol showed an advance of Id to l^d, while pieces and bellies were from Id to lid higher." The range of prices current was as fol* lows : — Merino, medium, 9d to lOd j halfbred, super 13d to 14§d, medium ll^d to 12|d, inferior 9d to 10^d ; Southdown, good to super, 12Ad to 14fd j crossbred, medium ll^d to 13d, coarse lid to 12|d, inferior B^d to 10^d ; pieces and bellies, 7d to 10j[d ; stained pieces and locks, 3£d to s|d, scoured pieces, bellies, and crutchings, 12£ d to 15£ d. Abraham and Williams (Mr. H. A. Keeling, auctioneer) report that competition was extremely keen for all classes of wool. Prices showed a very decided rise, and practically the whole of the catalogues were disposed of under the hammer. The wool submitted by us, some 2400 bales, was a good representative selection, opening up in very fair condition. As compared with last sale, the rise may be quoted as follows : — Supercrossbred, Id to lfd; medium and coarse crossbred, lfd to 2d ,- inferior, Id to l^d ; lambs, Id to l£d ; pieces and bellies, Id to l^d. Some of our sales were as follows i — PENBRYN, 16 bales Romney, 13id, 3 bales crossbred, 12^d, 3 bales lambs, lid; A4/RHYANI, 28 bales Romney, 12id, 5 bales Lincoln, llfd, 3 bales bellies and pieces, 9£d; MOTOA, la bales crossbred hoggets, 12d ; ARAWA, 16 bales crossbred, 12d, 4 bales lambs, 12£ d; OCO/PAPAWAI, 20 bales cropsbred, 12^d ; REX, 13 bales crossbred, 12£ d, 1 bale Southdown, 14£ d,' 3 bales lambs, 12d; Triangle/MOIKI, 2 bales Southdown," 14Jd; WGA/FERRY, 12 bales crossbred. 12d, 3 ' bales Southdown, 13d ; JNN/A; 14 bales crossbred, 12£ d; HWS/J, 12 bales crossbred, 12dj P/AH, 16 bales Ist crossbred, I2id, 3 bales cots, 12d, 3 bales lambs, Hid ; AD/WAIKAWA, 12 bales Ist cross--bred, lOfd, 27 bales crossbred, lOd ; JG, 23 bales crossbred, 12^d, 4 bales lambs, . 12|d ; TERURU, 10 bales A crossbred, 12d, 13 bales crossbred, HJd,' 4 bales lambs, lid; ,MAHARA, 4 bales crossbred, 12Jd, . 5 bales lambs, 13d; GFW, ,16 bales . crossbred, 12^d; HPG/S, 36 bales Lincoln, lljd; K0WAI, 11 bales crossbred, 12d ; E on side/W/EJW, 19 bales crossbred, 12id; TERA, 11 bales crossbred, 12£ d; HEA/0, 9 bales crossbred, 12£ d; ARARAWA, 38 bales logstained crossbred, 9fd j W/MATOPUIA, 14 bales crossbred, ll|d, 3 bales lambs, lid ; J and FR, 23 bales crossbred,' ll^d, 4' bales cots, 10£ d. WOOL FOR THE ARMY. Dalgety and Co., Ltd. .(Mr. Moodie, auctioneer) offered 6405 bajes. " Our ' catalogue contained a fair selection of medium well-grown crossbred wools, just the class of wool which is being keenly competed for at the present time. We showed a few lines of super "Romney, and some good and medium halfbred. Considering the time of year, the clip opened up well, the majority of the lots being bright and in fair condition. It was also pleasing to notice the comparative absence of seed for the, lateness of the season, probably due to a more careful handling of the clip and pasture 011 the part of the growers. The buyers operating were the same as at last sale, and before the first catalogue was offered it wus generally known that prices for crossbred wools were going to be extremely warm, and most growers will by this time have heard that prices, realised for all wools practically constitute a record for Wellington pales." As compared with Decqmber prices the crossbred market was higher by Id to 2d per lb. Halfbred met better competition, and values appreciated for the small quantity offering by about l£d per lb. Bellies, pieces, and cmtchinge also showed improvement, and made advances of Id to ljd. Very little merino was offering, and prices ruling were on a par with December rates. The sale must also easily constitute a record for sales made under the hammer, and at the end the brokers had practically made a total- clearance. Growers who were fortunate enough to have wool in the sale must all be highly satisfied with the splendid results obtained, and to-day's results go to show the large demand which is taking place for wools fit for the Army clothing. It was also evident that some Bradfojd buyers' limits were to " buy at best," a very unusual limit from such a quarter. Good clean lambs' wool was in great demand, extreme rates being paid lor such wool.
