MADE IN AMERICA ENGINES FOR NEW ZEALAND
THE GOVERNMENT'S ORDER The action of the Government in placing orders for ten locomotives witli an American firm evidently came as a surprise to many business men in the city. It was known that more engines were wanted, but not so soon, or that Government and other New Zealand shops were unable to turn them out by the time they would be wanted. As a matter of fact, it was at the end of July last, that the Government sought particulars of price and dates of delivery. It was stated then that an immediate purchase was not likely, but at the same time the cngihes, if ordered at all, might be Wanted in a hurry. From .then until to-day, it is understood, nothing more appears to have been heard of the matter by the representative of the firms who furnished particulars.
