A Press Association telegram from Adelaide, received this morning, stated : Branson, alias Jackson, arrested on the Niagara at Auckland recently, is a well kn&wn chaff merchant. He disappeared from his home, and was supposed to have been drowned. It has been discovered that his liabilities total £38,552. It has been ascertained that, he received large sums in cash prior to his disappearance, which he had not banked. He was traced to Sydney, where he opened a bank account, and later transferred the same to a Canadian bank. The police failed to arrest him in Sydney. . Many people do not know that Mr. Sidney Kidman, the Cattle King of Australia, owns property^ in New Zealand. As a matter of fact, he owned the large house and grounds lately occupied by General Sir Alexander Godley, who commands the New Zealand Forces in Egypt. Messrs. Gualter, Dykes and Co. have just sold this fine property to Mr. E. J. Righton, director of the New Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd. Action is being taken by, the Public Service Association with a view to payment being obtained by Civil servants for all work in excess of 44 hours a j week, and also for the removal of some of the restrictions in regard to obtaining the Commissioner's consent before overtime is worked. The City Engineer is to provide lifebelts, depth of water indicator, and other improvements at the Kilbirnie bathing sheds, «t a»i estimated cost of About £6.
