TERRITORIAL ASSAULTED

An assault of a serious character upon a young Territorial, Eric Coulson, led ,to the appearance in the dock this morning of John Johnston. .Dr. M'Gavin, who attended to Coulson, said that the young man's jaw was broken in two places. He had to be taken to the hospital, and was still under treatment there. James Henry Evans said that on the night of 18th January he was in company with Coulson. While away from his companion for a minute he saw accused and an old man. The latter rushed at witness with an open pocketknife, and witness, to save himself, struck him. He then rejoined his companion. Accused followed them up the street, and, without provocation, assaulted Coulson violently. Accused was arrested. After this evidence had been heard the Magistrate (Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) adjourned the case to 3vd February, when further evidence will be
