DEPRESSION IN TRADE

EMPLOYERS' APPLICATION TO REDUCE WAGES ARBITRATION COURT JUDGE'S REMARKS. (Received December 26, 10.17 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Mr. Justice Powers, in the Arbitration Court, refused the Feltham employers' application to grant a reduction in wages owing to a depression in trade caused by the war and drought. He expressed the opinion that the application was made to enable the employers to continue to employ men below the living wago for an indefinite period. He indicated that the applicants had shown a disposition to shirk their share of the burden during the present crisis. He hoped the employers would not require all the patriotism to be shown by the men.
