EXPEDITIONARY FORCES
THE MAORIS AT AVONDALE. Lieutenant-Colonel G. M. Gibbon, Chief of the General Staff, returned from Auckland yesterday, after inspecting the Maoris in camp at Avondale. The Maoris, he states, are in the best of health and spirits, and, being very keen, are making excellent progress in their soldiering. Captain Peacock, the camp commandant, has made excellent arrangements for the convenience of the men, and no complaints have been forthcoming. While in Auckland Colonel Gibbon also inspected the forte, ahd found them well kept and ver.) efficient This afternoon Colonel Gibbon paid a visit of inspection to the reinforcement camp at Trentham. Recruits are steadily enrolling for the further batches to be sent to Europe from time to time, but the requirements are by no means supplied, and' further extensive enrolments will be welcomed.
