be getting on well, and may be back at the office shortly. He may be ordered away for a eea trip, ahd will be back again before the Wanganui Spring Meeting. W. Mantle, who has trained for Mr. S. Pitt, the Stratford apol-teman, for some time, is also training for Mr. A. Alexander, the New Plymouth sportsman, at present. The horaeu include Patronale, a half-brother to the roan gelding by tho Lochiel horise Glonullin and Be/onian filly Selonainc. Charleroae. Mount Victoria, Gipsy Belle, and Prince Laddo are the \Vel» lington-uwned candidates engaged in the Winter Cup, G. Price, the Highden trainer, sends the writer a postcard from Sydney lo say he had gone on to Melbourne, and would probably visit South Australta, He leaves Sydney on the return trip on Saturday next, and will be at Trentha.m. Cheddar and Royal Arms, who are engaged In hurdle events at Trenthum and Riccarton have been schooled several times at New Plymouth, and, on tho whole, shaped satisfactorily. One morn* ing last week, however, Cheddar made a mistake at one of his fences, and falling gava his rider (A, Russell) a. bad Bha-k« ing, He broke a collarbohe and got a nasty cut across his chin, which had to be stitched up. In the Parliamentary Handicft-p, the Auckland performer, La. Reina., appears to have got her full share with 11.7, Ahd it will not be a. surprise if she is allowed to drop out. In the Cornwall Handicap, her last win, she carried 9.12, and in tho Parliamentary she has a Btone and a-lmlf more to carry. Huk&yne won the Prince of Wales Handicap with 10.10, and lias only gone up 61b. Other recent winners favourable treated, as compared withtha top weight., are Mysteriarch, who has only 21b more tha-n he won with at Hastings, and Portraiture, winner of an. open race tho second da.y &i th© Park, who has been dropped 21b. Mr. F. Armstrong withdrew Morning from the Winter Hurdles on Friday, the day the weights appeared. Morning did not compete over hurdle* at Hastings or Napier Park— in fact, he has not raced since he won the Ur&nd National Hurdles. In looking thlouelt the handicaps on Friday Wio WWter did not consider Morning for the above* stated reason. Last year Morning got in the Grand National hurdlw with tho minimum weight, and after winning the Trial Hurdles co-pried 9,12 to victory in the big race. -He is now placed within Sib 1 , of Player (Century Hurdles), slb of Kilmeny and Forest Prince (both good winners), a«d 41b of Te Onga (Great Northern Hurdles). Te Onga. only had the minimum weight in the big race at Ellerslie, but the following day won with 10.4, and has gon« up a stone. Morning has only been placed 2lb above Goodwin Park, who failed to win the Century Hurdles in what was practically a four-horse race, and the writer doe* not consider he was badly treated at Trentham. The Grand Na» tional weights are due after th* first day at Trentham, and it will be interesting to see how Mr. Henrys treatetfae Hawkes Bay horse. Did you see the start? You would see much better with a pair of good prismatic binoculars. O'Connor and Tydeman, Palmerston North, sell them from £5 10s.— Advt.
