(PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AKITIO RIVER BRIDGE OPENED

PONGAROA, 27th June. The Akitio river mouth traffic bridge was opened on Saturday by Mr. J. H. Escott, M.P., in the presence of a large number of settlers. Mrs. Armstrong, sen., cut tho ribbon with a pair of gold scissors presented by tho contractor, Mr. R. M'Kenzie. The bridge will be the means of linking up large areas of the district, and the ceremony is "tho most important in the history of the East Coast. Mr, Cooper, manager of tho Waingawa Freezing Works, addressed those present, Mr. F. Armstrong presiding. Mr. Cooper stated it would cost about £50,000 to establish works at Akitio to cope with an output of 1000 carcases per day. He also stated that the directors of the Waingawa Company had not officially considered tho question of erecting a branch at Akitio, but the settlers could rest assured that they would receive support of tho company and tho directors. Mr. Cooper said Akitio was one of the finest fattening districts in New Zealand. At present the distance was too great to drive fat lambs to Waingawa from Fongaroa. A strong committee was formed to canvass the district and further the project for tho erection of branch works at Akitio.
