EASTBOURNE'S REAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION

Increased interest is being shown this year in _ the work of the Eastbourno Beautifying Society, and executive and committee meetings have been very well atten.-led. The resignation of Mr. Sanson, headmaster of Muritai School, from ilie Executive Committee, has been accepted ( with regret, and Mr. P. iVE. Hotlgkins appointed in his place. On the Entertainments Committee, in place of Messrs. Chitty and Gray (resigned), Messrs. H. H. Tombs and O. Exley have been appointed. It has been decided that the society shall give a definite undertaking to plant 300 pines, without shelters, on the Recreation Ground, Jinish the planting of the main road, and, where necessary, replace trees planted last year. The attention of the Borough Council is to bo drawn to the unsatisfactory condition of the guards erected by the council, to the. many vacant spaces, and to the damage done to trees by wandering stock. The council is also to be requested to prohibit persons from tying their horses _ to the guards. A lecture is to be given at .Eastbourne on cottage building and gardening. Extensive arrangements are being made for the "working bee" on Arbor Day. A sub-committee of ladies is arranging for the voluntary provision of refreshments. Much practical assistance has been promised by persons outside the society. The first dance, hold in the second year of the society's existence, 2> l ' ovet ' very successful, and as regards finances, resulted in a profit of 12s lid. For the coming children's fancy dress dance prizes have been promised by Mrs. Leslie and Mr. C. N. West. Mr. and Mrs. Findlay are to be asked to act as judges, among boys over eight and under eight, and girls similarly.

Mrs, J. H. Pope, who has been in illhealth for some weeks past, underwent an operation at her residence, Maaramaci'escent, this morning. Mrs. Pope is progressing as well as can be expected.
