BIBLE IN SCHOOLS

TO THE 'KDITOR. Sir,— l am sorry no one has writkn to reply to some strictures passed on a letter from Mr. Robeit Lee that appeared in your columns lately, where also tho letters containing the strictures appeared. Mr. Lee, hav'ng left New Zea-Jan-i, could not reply to them. May I venture to urge that the words of &o experienced an educationist as Mr. Lee are well worthy of notice, especially his yarning of the danger that is threatening our schools. Air. Lee's critics find fault with his pointing out that the movement for the disturbance of what was the peaceful working of our schools until lately is by the clergy of four denominations only. But it is a matter of experience that the people at large were content with the system until the clergy began their agitation. The clergy themselves are a, witness of this, for they made many complaints about, what they called the apathy of Christian people. /These clergy have lately been making much noise, and" have been seeking to influence women especially. One correspondent, contradicting Mr. Lee, says that tho members of the Bible-in-Schoois League are not unmindful of their responsibilities, but we feel sure if the clergy had put into the work of instruct, ing the yonng, using their present opportunities, only half the energy they are displaying for the overthrow of our education system, there would have been little room for the present agitation. — I am, etc., CHAS. J. COOKE. 26th June, 1914.
