IMPREST SUPPLY DEBATE IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES THE FIRST CLASHES. The House of Representatives continued its sitting after The Post went to press yesterday afternoon. NEW BILLS. The Hokonui County Bill (Mr. J. G. Anderson) Was read a first time and referred to the Local Bills Committee. The Fire Inquests Bill (Mr. Sidey) and the Raihvay Improved Lands Bill (Mr. M'Oallum) were also read a first time. IMPREST SUPPLY. An Imprest Supply Bill was brought down during the afternoon, and led to a debate on various subjects lasting several hours. Most of the subjects referred to are dealt with in other portions of to-day's issue. The remainder were chiefly concerned with matters which have been discussed at length on public platforms throughout the Dominion during the recess. Reference was made by Mr. T. Seddon to the damage done , by the sea at Hokitika, and he wanted to know what steps the Public Works Department proposed to do to stop the. encroachment of the sea that is now going on to a dangerous extent. The Hon. W. Fraser said he was going on the advicfe of competent officers, who knew what they were doing-. They ■were carrying out the building of groynes, which had been erected on lines laid down by experience formed in England and Europe, and he was not going to be influenced by " every Dick, Tom, and Harry " who went round the country with a theory in his mind. He believed the policy of the Public Works Department in regard to the protective works atHokitika would be a success. The Bill was put through all stages and the House rose at 0.10 a.m. Two days' leave of absence was yesterday granted to Mr. W, D. S. MacDonald, M.P. for Bay of Plenty, and Mr. J, B. Hine, member for Stratford.
