POLICE AND MEN-O'-WAR'S MEN
SERIOUS MELEE IN AUCKLAND. (BY TEUQRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Fonr men-o' war's men from the Philomel and two civilians were arrested on charges of drunkenness and assault after a melee with the police in Sliortland-stveet early this, morning. The brawl originated in a man-o'-war's man being arrested for drunkenness and obscene language. His comrades rounded on one policeman making the arrest and on other constables arriving, and, a big crowd gathering, the affair became a melee. All the sailors and two civilians were taken into custody. The police were roughly handled. Helmets and uniforms were damaged, and a sergeant received a severe blow on the nose.
