Mr. Roosevelt denies the published statement (cabled a few days ago) that he intended to run ac tho Presidential candidate on the Progressive ticket. He laughed when he was informed of Mr. Savage Laudor's criticisms of the result of hie explorations, and declaTed that ho was absolutely certain in his own mind that he had discovered a new river. TMr. Roosevelt, interviewed at Barbadoes, was reported to have said : "I cannot say whether I shall again bo a candidate for the Presidency, but if so, it must be an a. Progressive platform which the Republicans must, accept.'^ Regarding tho alleged discovery of a' now river, Mr. Roosevelt has announced that it is 1000 mile's long. Tho upper portion ias never been eeen by a white man before, and the mouth ie known only to a few rubber hunters. The river is rinnavigable for most of its course, owing to rapids. While in this region tho members of the expedition spent 60 days in canoes, their progress only averaging two miles a day. Sir Clements Markhanij an ex-President of the Royal Geographical Society, expressed scepticism concerning the alleged discovery. Mr. Roosevelt is joined •• his companions in the declaration that existence of the Rhine or the Hudson might just as well be questioned. Mr. Roosevelt added that the existing maps of Brazil were entirely wrong, eomo of the mountains shown on them being entirely imaginary. Mr. Savage Lnndor, the well-known explorer, who has travelled in Brazil, also criticised Mi. Roosevelt's story, and the ox-Prceident has promised j to deal with him at a later date.
