GENERAL HAMILTON'S VISIT
ARRIVAL HERE TO-NIGHT. General Sir lan Hamilton, InspectorGeneral of the Overseas Foi'ces, will arrive in Wellington by the express from New Plymouth at 7.23 this evening, being by Major AshmSre, of his own staff, and MajorGeneral Godley, Officer Commanding the New Zealand Defence Forces, and staff. During the evening General Hamilton will attend the students' gathering in the Town Hall, and will deliver a speech. To-morrow _ morning, at 10 o'clock, General Hamilton will commence an inspection of the Wellington coastal defehces, starting at Fort Dorset, and will witness the Royal New Zealand and Garrison Artillery -at big gun 'practice at the | wrecked steamer Devon, and later in endeavouring to prevent the passage of a supposed hostile cruiser, in the form of tw,o Hongkong targets drawn by the Janie Seddon, into the harbour., After completing his inspection of the artillery corps and the coastal defences General Hamilton will return to town, and at 4 p.m. will be tendered a civic reception by the Mayor (Mr. J. _P. Luke) at the Town Hall, at which citizens are invited ' to be present. During the proceedings selections upbn the grand organ will be played by the City Organist (Ml 1 . Bernard Page). Later General Hamilton and the official party will be entertained at afternoon tea. 11l tho_ evening the General will dine with Ministers of the Crown. On Saturday afternoon Sir lan will inspect the Senior Cadets and rifle clubs at, Newtown Park, upwards of 1200 Cadets taking -part. As part of the proceedings the General will present the Ladies' Challenge Cups, which were purchased out of the fund raised by Mrs. Godley. Should the weather prove fine, the display to be given by the Cadets in the mar-ch past, physical drill, and advance in review order should be well worth seeing. On Saturday evenink Sir lan will dine with the members of the Wellington Club. The General will conclude bis visit to New Zealand next week with the inspection of the Wairarapa Cadets at Masterton on Monday, and the Marlborough Cadets at Blenheim on Wednesday. / In preparation for Saturday afternoon's inspection, -some sixty members of the local rifle clubs paraded at the Buckle-street Drill Hall last night, when they were put through the various .movements by President Marshall of the Karori Rifle' Club. 'Colonel C. B. Wolfe, Inspector of Kille Clubs, was present, and, at the conclusion of tho work, addreesed Iho parado. He expressed pleasure at meeting the combined clubfe for the first time, and spoke in terms of hiffh praise of their work Vuring the evening. On Saturday, as a compliment to General Hamilton ns a Highland officer, tho Wellington Highland Band will parade with the rifle cluba and play them on tho march. The Senior Cadets will hold a physical practice at the Drill Hall to-morrow.
