UNMARRIED DOCTORS

TIMARU, 19th May. The Timaru Hospital Board have been unable to_ hear of an unmarried doctor who is disengaged, and to-day decided to telegraph the resident surgeon, who lately resigned, to return for a year. A proposal to erect a house for a married resident doctor was favourably received. The honorary medical staff offered to carry on, but by the casting vote of the chairman the board decided to telegraph as above. The board has under consideration a dental ward for out-patients. WATERSIDE WORKER INJURED TIMABJJ, 19th May, A waterside worker named A. H. Toogood, aged 28, whilst employed removing hatches aboard the steamer Westmeath this evening, stepped back upon one, which was partly removed. He fell 11 feet to the next deck, striking a crossbeam with his back as he fell. He was removed to the hospital with an injured back. SIR lAN HAMILTON AT WANGANUI WANGANUI, 19th May. ' General Sir lan Hamilton arrived at Wanganui this afternoon, and inspected six hundred cadets, who took part in a sham fight. The General also inspected a good muster of men who had seen service in South Africa, and a number of veterans of the India, Crimea, and New Zealand wars. One ,of the oldest veterans who saw a great deal of service- is pedridden, and General Hamilton, hearing of this, called on the old gentleman, with whom he chatted for some time. In the evening the General was entertained at dinner by the Ma-yor and citizens, and at a smoke concert by the South African service men. NEW FREEZING WORKS MARTON, 19th May.. A largely attended .meeting of farmers and residents oi Marton to-day unanimously accepted the proposal of the Wellington Meat Export Company to" erect supplementary works, providing that 10,000 shares were allotted, the settlex s of the district to fix on the site. A pioviso was added that the works bo erected upon the most suitable sito between Kakariki and Marton Junction. A strong canvassing committee was elected to canvass the district for support.
