Hannan's intention is to seek ;i match with William Webb, of Wanganui, the ex-champion sculler of tho world and of New Zealand. When Webb boat, Charlie Towns for tho world's championship tho New Zealand title it wa3 understood went to George Whelch, of Aktiroa. After racing Ben Thoroughgood, the then ch.-impion of Australia, Whelch was challenged by and defeated Fogwcll. The latter was not convinced, and on a second trial won. Since then Fogwell has never had to defend the title. A month or so ago. however, he forfeited it to Hannan, who had challenged lviji. hut fin accident made it impossible to carry out the match. (Since then Hannan has been termed the New Zealand champion. Webb, however, disputes his claim, and so, Hannan has come across from Sydney to enforce it, and i'j prepared to meet him in a match for either £100 or £200 a-side. Hannan has brought two boats with him, a practice boat and a racing one, and will probably house them in the Star Club's shed. Ho will remain in Wellington about a fortnight, and will do some practise on the harbour. Meanwhile he will get into communication with Webb, and endeavour to fix a date for the match. When that is arranged, Georgo Towns will come across from Sydney to prepare the young New Zealander ,for the contest. Webb, it is understood, has been rowing well of late, and is sure to accommodate his challenger with an opportunity of securing the title by means of a match.
