DEMOLISHING THE DEVON

A start was mado this morning with tho operations which are designed to result in Iho total destruction of tho remains of tho steatnor Devon at Pencarrow Head. A scfuad of lifty members of the R.N.Z.A., under Liout. Thring, wont out to Fort Dorset, and fired oight or nine rounds from tho 6in. mark VII. guns, with armour piercing and lyddito shells. Tho operations were in charge of Liout. Tbving, and wero witnessed by Col Johnston (Director of Ordnance), and Major Hume, from tho Janie Seddou. It is reported that tho armour-piorcing shells {lid not find enough resistance to cause them to oxplodp, and wont right through tho vessel, and that tho lyddito shells proved much niqro effective, Hie bridge nnd funnel suffering severely. Tho' rango was something over 4000 yards.
