According to official reports, the persecution of Greeks in Eastern Thrace has been renewed with extreme vigour. Crowds of Greek peasants from Demotica have arrived at Dedeagatch with reports that their wives and children have been massacred. Others crossed the Maritza in boats^ under a volleying fire from the Turks. Many were drowned. VILLAGES DESTROYED. ATROCITIES DURING THE SECOND WAR. PARIS, 18th May. The International Committee despatched to the Balkans by the Carnegie Fund declares that, although the Greek Bishops of Djiran, Kavalla, and Serres had erroneously been reported to have been massacred, hundreds of villages had been wantonly destroyed, and many civilian and military prisoners "butchered. All the belligerents in the second war were guilty of atrocities.
