CUSTOMS ANOMALIES
ROAD ROLLERS AND AUSTRALIAN HARDWOODS. The anomaly of admitting traction engines into the Dominion free of charge, and charging 22£ per cent, customs duty on road rollers was referred to by Mr. J. Brown (Taranaki), who moved a remit at the Counties' Conference to-day that the rollers be imported free of duty. Traction engines, it was stated, destroyed' the roads, and yet were privileged. The remit was carried, the chairman at the same time pointing out that they had practically an assurance from the head of the Government that it was in entire sympathy with the request. Mr. W. Hathaway (Stratford) was also successful in carrying a remit urging that the Government be urged to take off the duty and extra railway charges now imposed on Australian hardwoods. According to the mover, if New Zealand had wood that could take the place of the Australian hardwoods there might be something in favour of the protective duty. As it was, however, no substitute could be found in the Dominion.
