The deposits in the' State Savings Banks at the end of last year totalled £20,158,000, an increase of £2,633,000. BROKEN HILL PROPRIETARY'S PROFITS. SYDNEY, This Day. The i Broken Hill Proprietary Company's net profits for the half-year ended 31st May amounted to £124,191. MURDERS BY A MADMAN. VIENNA, 19th August. An officer's servant named Boanian, in a fit of madness, ran amok in the barracks with a revolver. He killed the Countess Marianna Bolza, fatally wounded Captain Bisenkall, and wounded another officer. He then flung him-, self out of one of the barrack windows. His condition is critical. ACCIDENT ON AUSTRALIA'S FLAGSHIP. LONDON, 19th August. The fall of a derrick on board H.M.A.S. Australia, after leaving St. Vincent, resulted in the death of Pett| Officer Holmes. FEDERAL ELECTIONS. MELBOURNE, 19th August. Over 73 per centum of the electors voted at the recent Federal elections, compared with 63 per cent, in 1911, and 62 per cent, in 3910. DEATHS FROM HEAT. NEW YORK, 19th August. Eleven deaths have occurred in the State of Michigan as the result of the heat wave. The temperature was continually over 100 degrees. OLD-AGE PENSIONS IN BRITAIN. LONDON, 19th August. The Local Government Board returns state that 17.8 per 1000 of those eligible receive old-age pensions. The annual cost amounts to £7,948,016. Threefifths of the septuagenarians in England are old-age pensioners. (Received August 20, 9.10 a.m.) SUFFRAGETTES SET FIRE TO A TIMBER YARD. LONDON, 19th August. Suffragettes set fire to a timber yard at Bedford, but the fire was promptly extinguished. SCOTTISH MINERS' WAGES. LONDON, 19th August. The Scottish Miners' Federation unanimously recommended that steps be taken to secure a minimum wage of seven shillings a day. WATTLE AND CHARITY. MELBOURNE, This Day. Sales of wattle in connection with Wattle Day f netted £1917 on behalf of the women's and children's charities. Last year £850 was collected. MAN SHOOTS A WOMAN AND THEN HIMSELF. BRISBANE, This Day. As the result of an altercation Joseph M'Kunn, a lodger, shot Mrs. Geary, a boardinghouse proprietress, and then himself. Both are in a serious condition. (Received August 20, 1.30 p.m.) PLAGUE AT HONG KONG. HONG KONG, 19th August. There were sixteen cases of plague here last week, ten of the victims dying.
