SURVEYORS' EXAMINATION

LARGE NUMBERS OF CANDIDATES. A record number of candidates— 36 in all — presented themselves for the half-yearly examination for surveyors' ! licenses, begun yesterday in the presence } of the New Zealand Surveyors' Board. The members of the examining board are as follow : —Mr. Jas. Mackenzie (Sur-veyor-General), Mr. T. Humphries (president of the New Zealand Surveyors' Institute), Mr. T. M. Brodrick (Chief Surveyor), Mr. H. Sladden (a member of the council of the tnetituto of Surveyors), Mr. J. W. Harrison (an Auckland surveyor), and Mr. C. JS. Adams (secretary). The examination papers have been prepared by the Sydney boatd, and are circulated throughout New Zealand and Australia, so that the same examination is being held simultaneously throughout Australasia, in accordance with the Federal arrangement. Candidates passing can, consequently, practise in any part of Australasia. ! That portion of thc_ examination con--ducted yesterday consisted of viva voce examination of candidates by members of the board, in tho laws and regulations relating to survey work, practical astronomy, nnd practical levelling, and the use and adjustment of surveying instrument*. To-dny the candidates commenced work at Victoria College on the written papers, and this ■will continue until Saturday. <
