CIVIC AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF COUNCIL The City Council hejd its fortnightly meeting last evening. The Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren) presided. Councillors Shirtcliffe, Fitzgerald, Cameron, Fuller, Barber, Atkinson, Trevor, Frost, Cohen, M'Kenzie, Smith, and Godber were also present. The Baths and Reserves Committee recommended :— That the Metorological Observatory Director be informed that the council will undertake the work of keeping the grass enclosure at the Observatory in order on payment of £1 per annum, subject to the Reserves tool chest being kept inside, such enclosure, and the Reserves Department to have a key of the gate. That tfye use of the land — a portion of Newtown Park' — lying to the east of the Park-road be reserved for the uae of the Zoo; the land has an area of, approximately, two acres. That the application of the Kelburne Boy Scouts, for permission to erect a club-room on a portion of Kolburne Park or the Town Belt, be not acceded to, but that they be advised to apply to the Government for a sit© at the Kelburne Observatory. — The report was adopted. The Bylaws and Fire Brigade Committee recommended : — That the application for additional street lighting in Taranaki-street be. not : acceded to, as the Electrical Engineer reports that he is of opinion that the locality is well lighted. That an application for the erection of a dwelling at Oriental Bay, where a portion of the proposed structure would be on the public streot, be not granted. That the request of the cabmen to have the cab-stand at John-ston-street shifted to Panama-Btreet be acceded to. That an application for permission to store dangerous goods in i wooden shed at Taranaki-Btreet be not granted. That the renewed request for the change of name of Orangi Kaupaparoad to Tabor-street be not acceded to The council agreed to the change of name to Old Military-road. — The recommendation was adopted. The Outlying Districts Committee recommended that an owner of property at Hamilton-road, Kilbirnie, be' informed that, as the .council' intends to construct the footpath, it will be necessary for him to alter the entrance to such property, as recommended by the City Engineer. — The recommendation was adopted. Tne committee reported : — That it had visited Hataitai and Kilbirnie in connection with sundry requirements in these districts, and would bring down its recommendations at a later Btage. That it had inspected the improvements that were .being carried out- at Childorsterrace, Kilbirnie, and recommended that the City Engineer be empowered to negotiate with a property-owner for a small piece of land required to complete euch improvements. — The report •was adopted.
