MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Mr. W. G. Riddell. S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court to-day. Fines of ss, 10s, and 40s were imposed on Margaret Matier, John Mars, and Thomas Louis Gardiner respectively for drunkenness. Prohibition orders were issued against Matier and Girdiner. A middle-aged man named Robert Wm. Halliday, alias Smith and Dakiell, 'admitted obtaining money from Frederick Dobson, John Hurley, Rose Darrach, and Wil'iani Redmond by means of valueless cheque I*.1 *. It was -stated by Chief -Detective Broberg that accused on the 26th of April, 1911, eified at the Railway t Hotel, Palmerston North, and^ representing himself as the son of a wealthy farmer, cashed a choque for JBIO with the licensee. Six days later ho cumo to Wellington, and 011 two oceafcio/is cashed a cheque in a local hotel receiving sums of £1 and £2 respectively. From Wellington he proceeded to Carterton, where he was successful in cashing a cheque for £3. He was then lost sight of until the 2nd of this month, when tie was arrested at Blenheim by Detective Cameron. Accused, who had nothing to say, was sentenced to three monthsimprisonment on each charge, the sentences to run concurrently.* ,A sum of £3 9s found on accused was ordered to be divided among the people he had victimised. At tho Mount Cook Polico Court this morning, before Mr. T. Piloher, J.P., Henry Holland was fined 10s, with the option of forty-oight hours' detention for drunkenness. One firifc offender was convicted and discharged.
