Macpherson, charged with, conspiring to defraud the Singer ."?ewing Machine Company of £12,744, was .continued to-day. N Both aocusod reserved their defence, and were committed for trial. Bail was not asked for. Bvowu wa-s further charged with iar« ceny of £40, and remanded for two months. Macpherson was then charged with" 6t6uling three sums of £12 10s each.. The acting-manager produced a written confession, in tho course of which! Mucphereon stated that over einco he had held his present position he had been tampering with tho company's moneys. The defalcations amounted to about £0000. Macphersoh said he would take money, and alter the cash-books in different wave* m order to balance accounts. He had suggested getting Lough, from Chrietchurch, to straighten out the cash-books, as he was the only officer of tin* company with sulttcicnl experience. He supposed it was the olfl utory of a, man hoping to make good a- shortage aftd getting deeper into the mire._ The general manager had warned him against races, but he was then in too deep to stop betting! Ihe branch manager gave evidence thai so far there had been discovered a, shortage of £800 more than Maepher. son's confession allowed. • , Macpherson admitted that the- statements iv his confession were tnw, and. wao committed for trial.
