THORNDON CLUB'S CARNIVAL* Ab usual, both from the point of viow of attendance and the 6port provided, the Thorndon Swimming Club's Carnival, held on Saturday afternoon, was a pronounced success. In tho senior races tho swimming was not altogether up to the standard that was expected. The 100 yards President's Handicap was, of couree, tho most important event of the day, for tho reason that it was expected that Cyril Brice, the present holder of tho New Zealand honours, would show soino index of hm form. Despite the fact that Brico did not reach his figures of last year, ho swam well, and tho 2-5 of a second over hia former time at least did not show any great falling-ott'. The timo for tho race was b2 3-Seeo. An exhibition of life-saving was given during the afternoon, and tho greasy boom was reinstated." The last-mentioned event proved entertaining. In the 440 yards Provincial Championship,/ Healy, as was anticipated, was tho first to touch the boards. Murrell, Crowther, and Newton, tho other starters! all swam well. [BI ZKLXCmAPH— -PRESS ASSOCIATION.} ; AUCKLAND, 4th February. t The final swimming carnival in connecj tion with the Sydney team's visit to the Waitemuta Club was held in the Auckland Graving Dock yesterday afternoon, before about 2500 spectators. The swimming was of a high standard, and several I records woro broken. Miss Durack, the Australian lady cham-' pion, put up> two world's records for ladi.s" shimming. She swam 440 yards in bix n>iiiutes 42 seconds, beating her previous record by 10 seconds. She ' alto swam 50 yards in 31 seconds. M. E._ Champion reduced his New Zealand mile record from 25 minutos to 24 minutes 39 4-sseconds. A. W. Barry (Sydney) swam 100 yards in 59 4-5 seconds, and L. Solomons (Sydnqy) covered 50 yards in 26 seconds. Both these times are inside Now Zealand records, but, as there is a rule whereby no New Zealand records, by swimmers from other States are recognised unless the swimmers havo resided in the Dominion three months, the old records still stand. Waitemata won the intor-olub contest with Sydney by 19 points to 14. In thib contest tHe races decided on Saturday woro the 100 yards and the mile— both scratch events. A. W. At tho Australian swimming championship carnival the 220 yds breast-stroke was won by Finlay (Weet Australia), in 3min 12sec— a world's record. The 100 yds free style was won by Longworth, with' Stenberg (West Australia) second, and Springfield (Queensland), third. Longworth won by several lengths in 58 4-ssec.
