Fine weather is being experienced on the West Coast (states a Press Association telegram). The purchase of the Point Erin Estate, Shelly Beach, at a price of £19,000, for the purpose of a public park, was confirmed at the meeting of the Auckland City Council last week. The council received a. letter from the committee of the Citizens' League- heartily congratulating the Mayor and council on the purchase. The committee considered that the careful and economical man ncr in which the acquisition of the estate bad been negotiated would go far to strengthen the confidence the citizens had already shown in ths sitting Mayor and councillors.* There were some peculiar circumstances connected with an accident which occurred to the late Mr. Walter D. Cossar in Auckland shortly before his death. The deceased, who was a law clerk, was entering the front door of his house, when the wind blew it to. Mr. Cossar put out his hahd to "check it, and unfortunately put his hand through the leaded glass in the middle of his door, seriously injuring, the liga tures of his wrist. The result was that he found he was unable to close his hand, and it was with the object of obviating this difficulty that ho decided to undergo an operation, during the performance of which he died. A work "of interest to insurance men and actuaries ha,s just been published by the A.M.P, Society. It is the mortality experience of the society for 'the period from 1849 to 1903, and appears in tho form of a report made to the directors by Mr. Richard Teece. The author observes : "Looking to the volume of the experience a-nd the time over which it has extended, I venture to think that the results herein recorded may be safely relied on as a. ba-^is for the calculation of benefits and the valuation of policy liabilities by aaiy reputable office transa<;ting business in the Commonwealth. No other experience of this nature bas been published , and I think the board has bhowrt a due cense of the duty which it owes to the cause of life assurances in making tho«-e results available to the public. Colonel Hfard, Director of Staff Duties and Militaiy Tisining, will leave for the S^juth on ' Iftidajr nest " "
