IMPROVEMENT SCHEMES.
In connection with the new Parliament Buildings scheme, Cabinet yesterday authorised the expenditure, out of moneys appropriated by Parliament, of the sum of £700. This, it is estimated, will be sufficient for widening Charlotte-street, by putting back the fence of Parliament Buildings grounds 16 feet, and forming the roadway and footpath. A start will be made with the work immediately. The next step towards carrying out the scheme is the acquisition of Quinton's corner, for the purpose of widening Bowen-street, and negotiations with the owners of the land are proceeding to that end. Meanwhile the Public Works Department is being approached by architects from all parts of N-ew Zealand for the necessary particulars to enable them to send 'in competitive designs for the new Parliament Buildings. These have to reach the department by the end of July, and it is evident that a considerable amount of interest has been evoked among architects generally.
