COAST SURVEY.

WHAT THE GOVERNMENT INTENDS DOING. PRIME MINISTER TO MAKE ENQUIRIES IN LONDON. The need for a proper survey of the New Zealand coast, since the disquieting disclosure that The Three Kings Isiands ar,e three miles out of position on the charts, has been insisted on by almost every shipping master in New Zealand. The subject has also been under the consideration of the Minister of Marine (the Hon. J. A. Millar). Speaking to a Post reporter to-day. Mr. Millar stated that he intended to have the matter brought before Cabinet with, a view to seeing whether the Prime Minister could not, while in England, make terms with the Board of Trade for carrying out the work. "If we are going to do the work ourselves," he added, "it will run into a very great deal of money and take years to complete." The Minister was asked whether it would not be possible, as suggested in The Post by a shipping master on the' 14th inst., to arrange for the "location" of the most dangerous rocks and points on the coast? "In all probability," he answered, "w will be able to do something. Cabinet has authorised the payment of a certain sum to have trork of the character mentioned 1 carried out by the Terra Nova after she returns from the Antarctic, During the interval between the landing of Captain Scott's party and her return to the ice fields for the explorers the Terra Nova will be engaged in tidal and scientific work, and the Government has agreed to give £1000 as a contribution. I had a talk with Captain Scott about the survey of our coast, and lie informed me that the vessel had all the necessary appliances on board, and an officer whose survey would be accepted by the Admiralty. If it is possible, therefore, to have a few points 'located* which at present are believed to be improperly charted the* work will be done. This, of course, would be no part of a complete survey. Any arrangement 'in that direction will be discussed by Sir Joseph .Ward when at Home."
