The Pope has inflicted major excommunication on the Re-vs. Beal© and Howarth, of Nottingham, who were consocrated by Dr. Mathew, the Old* Catholic bishop. [The Old Catholics recognise th« canons 'and decrees of tie Council of Trent, but refuse to accept the dogma of Papal infallibility, They permit the marriage of priests, the use of the native tongue in the church semoes, and the restoration of the cup to the laity in Mass. The Old Catholics- in jßngland were recently reorganised, and Dr. Mathew consecrated as their bishop. They are for the most part Dutchmen. or Germans who have been connected with Old Catholic churches and who. are now resident in England.]
