Long, who was Chief Sec- | retary for Ireland in tho Unionist Government, speaking at Bristol, urged relentless opposition to the Parliament, Bill, in order to secure an alternative scheme for the reconstruction of the House of Lords, which should be' brought into closer conformity with the needs of the time. The Government, said Mr. Long, proposed to paralyse the House of Lords in order to arbitrarily carry Home Rule for Ireland. THE PARTIES IN POWER. ACCORDING TO THE DUKE OF; BEDFORD. PUPPET PEERS. LONDON, 26th February. The Duke of Bedford, in a speech at Bedford, denounced the Veto Bill, declaring that the parties in power were the Nationalists and Labourites. These sections, though fundamentally differing from each other, yet controlled the Cabinet from without. He hoped the House of Lords would introduce a clause preserving double chamber Government intact. Otherwise he would prefer to see the. creation of five hundred puppet peers than the passing of the Veto Bill. ARCTIC EXPLORATION. ♦ DRIFT TO THE POLE. By Telegraph.— Vress Association.— Copyright.
