NEW ZEALAND MUTTON IN LONDON.
The Pastoralists' Review for February says :— "Our London frozen meat correspondent, in dealing with the position and prospects of the trade in the Old Country last month, very particularly referred to a break in New Zealand arrivals. New Zealand sends all her available mutton to Great Britain, and yet still for two months out. of the twelve there is none on the market there. The importers work up a trade, and there comes a time when they cannot supply tho steady demand of a valuable connection. The retailer, who looks to the importer for his supplies, in in the same position. He must supply his ' customers, and looks round for meat from ether sources, which probably fills his requirements nearly, ii not quite, as well as the Xew Zealand. The mutton from this new source of supply is sure to be cheaper, and possibly comes more regularly to the London 'market. So the New Zealand importer, when his stores are again full, has to work up his , connection all over again. Surely there is come remedy. 7t is to the interest of I the grower, the exporter, and the importer, to maintain a regular supply all tho year round. Retailers who have been in the habit of taking Canterbury mutton are often forced on to Plate, and once they get used to the latter it is a haxd battle to get them to 4|d pei» lb for Canterbury after they have got their- customers accustomed to the Argentine article, which can be bought go much chespge,."- *
