WELLINGTON DOCK.

REFERENCES IN PARLIAMENT. Wellington's dock was one of the subjects briefly discussed during the debate j on the Harbour Bill in the House of Representatives 'last night. Mr. J. P. Luke said he regretted the disability in the way of construction, but he realised that the matter had to be approached with a great deal of caution. No one regretted more than he did that up to the present time the dock undertaking did not show a tendency to become a complete success, and especially as he was one who did some work in advocating and helping to bring about the starting of the dock project for the port of Wellington. In connection with the work there was a disability that was not foreseen when the original specification was drawn up. He believed that the specification set out the means and methods of construction and the carrying on of the work. Now a deadlock had arisen. He understood that legislation was being sought this session to finally settle the question whether the present undertaking should be abandoned or not. Mr. A. W. Hogg remarked that he had been against the project from the very first. Mr. W. C. Buchanan declared there was no justification for the construction of such a work. In his opinion it would never have been begun but "for the jealousy between cities and cities." There the dock subject dropped. ,
