LATE SPORTING.

WORK AT TRENTHAM. (By Sir Bedivere.) There was an exceedingly sharp frost last night, and for a considerable time after sunrise tho ground was as white as a snowdrop. All the work was done on the trialgallop, which, though slightly holding, was in excellent order. The proceedings, however, were of a very unexciting nature, as, with two or three exceptions, horses were restricted to steady pacing. T^uira, with H. Telford up, was given a nice working gallop over two miles, and his free style of going attracted favourable notice. His stable-mate, St. Felix, was doing his best at the end of a spin over six furlongs, run in lmin 24sec. Waione strode over two circuits, the first at half and the second at threequarter pace. He is looking very well, and his maiden effort over country will be awaited with interest. Truganini ran along down the straight at three-quarter pace, and the remaining members of Lowe's team, viz., Advantage, Iranui, Iney, Magneto, Lord Kelvin, Effort, and Gold Lace were allotted easy tasks to half-pace exercise." Ngapuka (M. Ryan), bearing a wiry and well-seasoned appearance, went twice round at half-pace, and another of the most recent arrivals in Miss Advance, who seemed to be a bit tied up in her action, was out cantering. The following horses got through more or less easy tasks : — Southern Cross, Lady Kilcheran (who in Jenkins's hands went more quietly than usual), Inchbonny, Bracken, Mahuta, North East, Lovell, White Lie, Capitol, Moloch, Ukraine, and Sonite. To-morrow morning a lot of interest- j ing work, including a considerable j amount of jumping, will probably be witnessed. GENERAL NOTES. Private news has been received by cable to tho effect that Mr. J. B. Reid, who is on a visit to England, has purchased on the joint account of himself and Mr. J. D. Duncan, the stallions Downahire and Varco, each of whom is said to be an exceptionally good-lookinu horse. The former, who will be located at Elderslie, is of Touchstone descent, being by Ayrshire out of Seadown, by Orvioto-— New Zealand, by Isonomy — Australia, by Hermit. He won a num ber of races in England, and is a member of tho Promise branch of the No. 1 family,, from which Whalebone, Whisker, Blue Gowns, Silvio, Minting, and Santoi are descended. Varco is by Marco, out of Vara, by St. Angelo — Cheap Loaf, by Isonomy — Breadfinder, by Brown Bread. He won the Woodcote Stakes last year, running the six furlong course in lmin 10 4-ssec, and having Neil Gow behind him, and is a member of the No. 8 family. On his sire's side he is a direct descendant of Melbourne, whilst his third dam, Breadfinder, was a daughter of Ethel, whose half-sister Artless won the Cambridgeshire in 1859. Tawhaki, Stayboy, and Pinnl arrived from tho South yesterday, and were taken out to Trentham this morning. The two first-named are in charge of their owner, J. M' Combe, and Pinul is in J. Ruttledge's hands. Most of the prominent horsemen have now accepted mounts in the Parliamentary Handicap, among the probable starters for which are — California (J. Griffiths), North East (W. Young), Sir I 'Frisco (R. Hatch), Tiptoe (S. Reid), Ngapuka (M. Ryan), Bollin (F. D. Jones), Truganini (W. Ryan), Tawliaki (E. Lowe), Ambrosian (A. Oliver), Gold 1 Battery (H. Gray), and St. Felix (C. Jenkins). GRAND NATIONAL SCRATCHINGS. [BY TELEGBAPH — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Ben Jonson was scratched for the Grand National Hurdles at 0.30 a.m. today.
