The chairman of directors of the Ross Goldfields Company, Ltd., received the following telegram from the managing engineer on Thursday : — "Hope to have a trial run of the pumps in the chamber on Thursday. Then one week will be necessary tb skid the winding shafts, another to clear the roads, and then will commence the taking out of the wash dirt." WATER-POWER REGULATIONS. HOKITIKA, 13th May. At a special meeting of the Rimu Miners' Association, held to-night, the following resolution was passed : — "That the Government, through the member for the district, be urged to insert in the present mining regulations the regulation authorising the amalgamation of water rights, the said amalgamation clause having been omitted in 1898." The meeting was unanimously of the opinion that the Government should be further urged to facilitate the development of the goldmining industry, and give some inducement to outside capitalists who are willing to invest in alluvial mining propositions in the Dominion. It was stated at the meeting that the capitalists who were interested in the Rimu Toaroha, which has been prevented from taking practical shape owing to the present water-power regulations, have, since benig approached in regard to this scheme, invested •in an Australian venture to the) extent of £550,000. If the water power had been available for the Rimu Flat when first applied for, the Toaroha Company would now be about to commence operations as it was originally intended to undertake this proposition before the Australian venture.
