The- collier Waihora, under the command of Captain Hutchings, arrived at Lyttelton late .on Thursday night from Newcastle. She left the coal port on Wednesday, the 4th May, and two days later ran into a heavy gale fponi the east. On the following day the galo increased, and the engines were eased off. The vessel shipped seas fore and aft, and took one big wave that smashed a door and shifted a gangway. On Sunday the weather, which was still easterly and south-easterly, moderated, and tolie vessel resumed full sp«ed. By midnight on Monday, however, the gale had come on again, and on Tuesday it was very fierce. At 0.40 a.m. a big sea broke over the forecastle- and washed away a stack of awnmg spreaders and bent some of the railing. Another &ea shifted a bulkhead and almost washed two of the crew out of their bunks. The quarters of flic men were made very uncomfortable, and the vessel w.^s again hove-to. On Wednesday the weather cleared, and at 7 p.m. Cape Karewell light was seen. Off Stephens Island the vessel ran into calm weather, and tho crew took advantage of a warm snn to dry their clothes and bedding. From Stephens Island the collier had smooth seas until she reached lyttelton, but her rusty decks gave visible evidence of the seas she had taken aboard. Tho Waihora brought a full cargo to be discharged at Lyttelton and Timaru. INDRAI/EMA BUFFETED. The Tyser steamer Iwiratema, which arrirod at Auckland from New York, via Australian ports, on Thursday morning, encountered some very rough weather during the passage (says the' Star). After a -fine weather run to fhe Cape of Good Hope she ran into ■fierce gales, which commenced on the 26th March, and continued with more or less severity until arrival at Melbourne on the 28th April. On the 11th, 12th, and 13th April an exceptionally heavy gale prevailed, and . the ship's decks were constantly flooded. The forecastle was gutted, the witter finding its way in through the companionways and the ports. It was then found necessasy to run the boat before the wind until repairs were effected, and 'in the meantime the stokers had perforce to quarter in the engineroom. Heavy weather was picked up again between Sydney and Auckland. The Indrcrierna left Sydney at 3 p.m. on Friday week, and experienced strong winds and seas, with heavy rain, till Saturday last, when a whole gale was encountered, lasting throughout that day and Sunday. The ship being in light trim, shipped little water, but laboured heavily. Hazy weather and copious rain continued until arrival at Auckland. Mr. M. McGregor, mate of the Holmdale, has resigned from the vessel. Mr. W. B. Robertson, fate second mate, is to be mate, and Mr. J. P. Corbett second. The Aparima, from Calcutta, via Singapore and Satnarang, is landing 3000 tons of cargo at Auckland. She has 370 tons for Wellington, 420 tons for Lyrfcetton, 950 tons for Dunedin, and . 570 tons for Bluff. The steamer is due 'here on Monday. The Christchurch Press understands that in September next the tnrbine ferty steamer Maori -will go down to Port Chalmers for an extensive general overhaul and survey. While on a voyage from Gisborne to Kaia- j poi this week the Kaiapoi Shipping and Trading Company's steamer Kairaki threw two blades from one of her propellers, and she» went to LytteSon for repairs. These were effected on Thursday night. The barquenline Sftnorifea, en route from ■Newcastle to Giiborne, passed Farewell Spit yesterday afternoon. She is nineteen days out. The Union Company's collier Kaituna, which left port yesterday for Westport, is due back here next Tuesday with a load of coal. Good work was accomplished by the Moe- • raki at Wellington yestecday. Between tho hours oE 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. nearly 1200 tons of cargo was hamHed, §00 tons being discharged and 300 tons taken in. Mr. W. H. D. Bold, who was temporarily chief officer of the Moeraki, came ashore yesterday, and is proceeding to Greymouth to take up the position of acting-wharfinger for the Union Company. Mr. J. Stewart, fourth officer of the Koeraki, went south to join the Eaiapoi as third officer. There are still two members of the crew of the Waikaa-e who seem to consider that they are. not (tiscDarged (say a the Otago Daily Times' Btafl correspondent). There are still to be seen on Stop Island a couple of shaggy cats, who have taken up their abode ' on a rock bound face on the back of the island. Diver May states that when he first arrived ■at the- island he was astonished at the regularity witli which these two faithfnl animals visited the beach every morning. At first they ' were shy, and did not seem at all anxious to make new acquaintances. A few tokens of amity such as scraps of tinned meat soon overcanfe -their diffidence, and Mr. May and his new-made friends were-on the best possible terms. Touched with their faithfulness, and in anticipation of leaving the island, he prepared a. loosebox and invited the cats to make themselves comfortable during the voyage. No sooner did they divine his real purpose than they made a boit for it, ond not as cat was to be seen when they left the island. Shortly after 4 p.m. yesterday _the barque Rona sailed from Wellington for Napier, where the remainder of her ctrgo of sait will be discharged. The .barqiiu will afterwards sail for Kaipara* to load timber for Sydney. Captain James Stewart, who brought out tho Gtsborne Haxbour Board's new dredge Maui from Scotland, was presented w'th a memento of the trip by the officers an'J crew prior to his returning to England. The Shaw, SawiJ, and Albion Company's steamer Tokonuru is to leave Lyttelton lor Nelson to-day. The vessel is due at Wel- , lington on Tuesday night next, and after loading and bunkering, -will sail on Friday, the 20th inst., for London via ports. Before leaving New Zealand for the East the Aparima, which leaves Auckland to-day for Wellington and southern ports, will be placed in the dock at Port Chalmers.
