NEW BIG RIVER SOUTH. ~" The following telegram was received to-day by the Wellington Stock Exchange from the Big River South Gold Mining Co. : — "Big River South Mines mine report for, week ending 3rd inst. : Contractors extended tunnel 27ft, making 398 ft driven to date— the drive now very wet, otherwise no change."
The amount ofj revenue: derived from Customs dues at Wellington for the week ending to-day was £15,2^9 15s sd. Beer duty accounted for £300 10s, and the surtax £269 2s 7d. Dr. M'Arthur, S.M., to-day heard the case brought by Alexander Macdougall against Donald Stuart and his wife — a claim for £2 10s for one week's rent in lieu of notice. Plaintiff's statement of claim declared that defendants leased a house of his for twelve mpnths, at a rental of £2 10s .per week, beginning with Ist May, 1909. The lease was not signed, and defendants paid rent weekly until 7th August, when defendants removed their furniture without giving, it is alleged, due notice. Defendants entered a counterclaim for £1 100 for cleaning in the house and £5 damage for inconvenience while the interior of the house was being repaired. After taking certain evidence, the court adjourned till Monday afternoon next. Mr. T. E. Petherick appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. D. M. Findlay for deiendants. Timber of an exceptionally good quality is reaching Masterton from Manunui, on the Main Trunk Kne, near Taumarunui. According to the Wairarapa Age, out of a consignment of over 50,000 ft tor a dw'ellinghouse not a single foot was condemned. The varieties of ' timber were totara, matai, and rimu. -The architect for the work declared he i had never seen a better assemblage of timber.
