TWO WOMEN INJURED.
ALLEGED ASSAULT. Two women named Mary Dowsett and Margaret Sheehan, -and* a man named David Bates are --alleged to have been concerned in a quarrel in Drummond'slane, resulting in the last-named being arrested by the police yesterday. In the Magistrate's Court this morning he was charged with assaulting both women, and also with causing Margaret Sheehan actual bodily harm. Accused was asked how he pleaded. "I know nothing about it, sir," he replied. Sub-Inspector Norwood informed 'the bench that Mrs. Sheehan had been conveyed to the Hospital suffering from two knife wounds in one of her thighs. Her body was also bruised and both her eyes black and swollen. It is also alleged that the instrument used by her assailant was a table knife, the blade of which is said to have been broken in the affray. The woman Mary Dowsett attempted to interfere, and she received some severe blows about the face arid eyes. Sub-Inspector Norwood asked for . a remand, as Mrs. Sheehan was unable to appear. Accused was accordingly remanded till next Friday.
Now that the King's Wharf is completed the* Harbour Board authorities intend to have as many vessels berthed there as possible, in order that the wharf should bear its share of the activity of the port. Since -Wednesday last the Athenic has been discharging at the King's Wharf, and to-morrow the Union Company's steamer Monowai is to be berthed there. The latter vessel will have a considerable quantity of cargo for transhipment. A party of about fifteen "general service" men signed off the Athenic this morning. There are still about fifty on board who will come ashore at a later date. To-day volunteer collectors have been busy in the streets for the St. John Ambulance Association work. A liberal -response is looked for, as the work is a very deserving one. The volunteers have lain in wait in all the likely places, and citizens, it is hoped, will recognise both the object and liJie selfsacrifice by contributing generously. At the annual meeting of the Petone Building Society, held last . evening, the chairman of directors (Mr. R. Edmeades)' presided. The annual report and. bal-ance-sheet showed the society to *be in & sound financial condition. Messrs. Lsbezeit, Godfrey, Naughton, and Edmeades* were re-eJecteid directors, ai".d( •Mr. W. H. Cates shareholders' audi-' tor." Bavarian brewers made 488;261,369 gallons of beer last "year, according to the United States Consul. They exported 73f59/502 gallons, mainly to other German States, the consumption at home being 248 quarts for each man, ;woman, ana child.
