THE STATE COAL MINE TROUBLE.
IS THERE A LEGITIMATE GRD3VANCE? IVS TELEGRAPH — SPECIAL TO THE POST.] WESTPORT, 3rd December. If the federation decides on a ballot it in difficult to 6ay what the result would be, as miners in this district regard the position at Grey as likely to lead to reductions here. An article in the Westport Timea says that the State miners have a substantial grievance, a grievance that would compel a remedy, were it represented to an "unbiassed commissioner. The trucking rule means that the State gets its coal hewn at Grey at fourpence per ton less than proprietary companies. ''This," states the Times, "should not be allowed to continue. It is unfair competition, and a condition of things upon which private management might reasonably have founded demand for a reduction in the hewing rate in their mines. It is a testimonial to tho sense of justice of j the companies that tho claim has not been made, nor is likely to be made."
