THE TURF.
TO CORRESPONDENTS. "F.R.Jl."— Finland, by Bill of Tortlnnd— Fishwife. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Mr. R. C. Hungerford, secretary of the New South Wales Trotting Club, will arrive from Sydney by the Moana to-morrow, to represent New South Wales di the conference of intercolonial delegates to be held at Christchurch j next- week. Prior to leaving the Dominion tor Australia about nine years j ago Mr. Hungerford was secretary to | the Greymouth Club, and attended sevj era I conferences in Wellington. He is a son of the late Mr. T. W. Hungerford, who&e colours were carried to the fore by British Lion, Whakawatea, and other performers. H. Cairns left for South last night to rids Mcrrie Zealand in his New Zealand Cup engagement. ' The horseman named expects to go to scale at about 7.10 or 7.11. The -withdrawal of Perle dOr from her Stewards' Handicap and Oaks engagements probably means that the full sister to Golden Slipper has been tried and found wanting. She was trained by Mr. K. J. Mason at, YaldhurSt, and was to have been ridden by R. Hatch. Mr. G. D. Greenwood obtained one of the bargains of the Yaldhurst sale in Armlet at 000 guineas, but he also' made two bad "bargains in Sunglow (750 guineas),' and l'erle dOr (2000 guineas). Another high-priced youngster engaged in the Stewards' Handicap is Ormulu (Orme — Hey Presto) who was knocked down to the Messrs. Stead for 1550 guineas. Owners of horses engaged at the Tara-tahi-Carterton. meeting are reminded that acceptances for the farst day's handicap events, also the Guineas, and entries for the Trial PJale, six furlongs, and Maiden Hack Scurry, five furlongs, close to-morrow at 9 p.m. with Mr. J. B. Bairslow (secretary), Carterton. The telegraph office closes at 8 o'clock. King Post was shipped South last night to fulfil his engagement in the Riccarton Welter. Diabolo has a stone more in. that event than in the Wainui Handicap, and is expected to show improvement'on his Tientham form. Merrie Eose broke down recently, and was not seen out at the Masterton meeting in consequence. ' Sir Frisco's poor display on ''the first day of the Masterton meeting his trainer attributes to the frequent breaks away allowed by the starter. The rain that fell on the second day was no doubt responsible for fewer fake starts than on the previous day. W. Bennett, a light weight attached to J. Cross's Opaki 'stable, went South on Saturday,- and will ride Merrivonia in the New Zealand Cup. ' W. Ryan goes South to ride Gold Lace in the Stewards' Handicap.^, The rider named was offered a retainer to ride for Mr. G. P. Donnelly, but preferred to remain attached to Lowe's stable. E. Hatch has been engaged to ride Cronstadt, brother to All Red, in the Derby. • The two-year-old full-brother to Iranui was. recently sent back to his owner in Gisborne where he will be given a long spell. He got away from an attendant at Trentham and came down on his knees, injuring himself. He is a grey in colour, and takes after Canteen, another of the Vivandiere. family. Albert Goodman will take four of the Endeavour Lodge team to Gavterton, viz., Sir Frisco, Longner, lney, and Sea Queen. Iranui will probably be spelled for a faw weeks. H. Kirk, who is attached to Lowe's stable, will do the lightweight riding. Mr. W. E. Bidwill, chairman of stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club, was entertained at luncheon at Tauherenikau yesterday. J. W. Lowe left for the South last /night with Truganini, Lord Kelvin, Gold Lace, Magneto, and Effort. The brood mare Kokiri (dam of Keplete and Passion) died recently after foaling to Elevation. Sir Lethe went off after racing at Marlinborough and was suffering trom a cold at Masterton. , This probably accounts for the poor showing he made in both his races there. He is to be spelled until the winter season, when he will compete in oppn company m steeplechase events. Tyrannic was shipped South yesterday to fulfil his hurdle race engagements at Eiccarton. C. Cress goes South to ride him. Silken Rein was credited with running a mile and a half in 2min 48sec. Private watches made the time 2min 53sec, and this was probably near the mark. With Silken Rein and Gold Bird H. Fletcher ran three firsts and a second at Masterton. The only members of C. Pritchard's team to compete at Carterton will be Mr. Paterson's pair, Mon Ami and Miscast. R. Hatch's apprentice's license expired on Saturday last, and he was yesterday granted a jockey's license by the Wellington Raring Club. He^" went South on Saturday, and will ride some of Mr. Mason's team in their training work. J. W. Lowe was naturally very pleased to see two horses in his stable owned by different patrons finish a dead heat. The owner- of Iranui resides in Gisborne, and does not attend many meetings. On the morning of the second day of the Masterton meeting Lowe advised Mr. Hal! by wire that both horses — Sir Frisco and Iranui — were starting, and that he could not separate them. The horsemen attached to the stable are W. Ryan and H. Kirk. When other riders are put up they are engaged by the owners of the horses. At the monthly meeting of stewards oi the Wellington Racing Club, held yesterday afternoon, !J3. Crawford's jockey's licenses was! cancelled. Tlie disqualification of J. M'Gregor by the Otaki Maori Racing Club was referred back for further evidence. It was resolved that the disqualification of the jockey T. O'Jfcien should expire on 61st July, 1910. The following horses were shipped South last night to-'fulfil their engagements at the C.J.C. meeting: — Merrivonia, King Post, Mania, Truganini, Gold Lace, Lord Kelvin, Advantage, Effort, and Xavier.
