GOLD IN THE TARARUAS.
A SUBSIDY WANTED.* _ DEPUTATION TO THE MINISJER. The Minister for Mines (Hon. R. M'Kenzie) was waited on this afternoon by a deputation which asked that a subsidy should be given towards the cost of prospecting the Tararua range for the discovery of gold and other minerals. To a similar previous request the Minister had replied that a subsidy could not be given as the ranges are not within a mining, district, and the deputation, which was introduced by Mr. Field, M.P., desired to see if that difficulty could be got over.' In answer to Mr. Field, the Minister said that an amount could be put on the estimates. Mr. Field said the deputation would request that that should be done Mr. B. R. Gardener,, Mayor of Levin, said that old miners were of opinion that coal and gold would be found in ! the range. The range had never been properly prospected. ' In view of the general opinion that there were 'metals in the range, a couple of hundred pounds would pot be misspent by the' Government on prospecting. If this amount were given he could obtain a similar sum from the district. Mr. Richards said that in many cases traces of coal and/gold had been found. If gold had been found at the north and south of the range, it was highly probable that it was present in payable quantities in Lhe x-ange. Mr: Venn said he knew for a certainty that there was coal behind Shannon Gold could be got in any of the small gulhes within ten miles of Wellington, but not in payable quantities. lne Minister said he believed that there might be gold and coal existing xn the range. He thought the best course would be to form a prospecting association and apply to the Government for a subsidy of £ for £ up to £200. He would then lay the matter before Cabinet, and see what they could do. .There would be a Mining Bill before ! the House, and he could make the district .a mining district. Mr. Gardener said a resolution had been passed at a public meeting in favour of setting up a prospecting association. _ * ° The Minister said it only remained to appoint officers and form 'the association in the regular way.
