Suddenly a portion of the pavement opened up, and two persons — a man and a woman — passing at the moment wens engulfed. The man was rescued, with some diffi- ' culty, but the woman disappeared. The accident was due to the collapse j of "a part of the roof of a disused quarry under the street. '
