CHARGE OF BURGLARY.

Two young men — Alfred George Driscoll and Thomas O'Neill — were together charged in the Magistrate's Court this afternoon, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., with burglary. It was alleged that last Friday they broke and entered "The Missing Link" second-hand shop in Taranaki-street.by night, and stole a large quantity of watches, chains, and jewellery, valued at £49 13s 6d, the property of Edwin Joseph Ellis. Sub-Inspector Norwood conducted the prosecution, and Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for the defence. Evidence was given by Ellis, the proprietor of the shop. He stated that last Thursday night he left his premises securely locked up at 9.15 o'clock. About 1 a.m. on the Friday morning he was aroused by a policeman, with whom he went to the Police Station. There he identified certain articles as his property. On returning to his shop ho discovered that twenty-three watches were still missing. A hole ten inches by six inches had been broken in the shop window. (Proceeding. ) ■ FIRE ON TINAKORI-ROAD. A call to Tinakori-road was received by the Firo Brigado at an early hour (2.20) this morning, tho cause being an outbreak of fire in an unocci*i>ied four-roomed house situated near tho Botanical Gardens. The building, which was owned by Mr. John Waters, was badly damaged before the fire was extinguished. It was insured in tho London and Lancashire Office for £200. SCHOOL FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP. The Wellington public schools' football championships havo iust been decided. Terrace School first fifteen is the winner of the senior section with 122 points for and 26 against. Nine gamorf were played and eight won. Tho second fifteen of tho same school is tho winner of the junior section.
