An amendment that the rate bo Id in the £ was lost. Thoso voting in favour of the higher raie wens tbo Mayor (Mr. A. Armstrong), and Councillors Toomath, Mason, and Lave ey, and against it, Counoillors Callister, Pink, Rathbono, Dudcon, and Bcrrill. Thoro was an endeavour made to oaj down the' water rate from 7 per cent, to 6 per oent., but the motion was defeated by seven votes to two.
