A SUBSTANTIAL LIST.

[BY TELEGBAPH. — MESS ASSOCIATION.] GISBORNE, This Day.

Six hundred cases are set down for hearing at the sitting of the Native Land Court commencing her© next week

The Minister , for Public Works has acceded to a request by tho Wellington Master Builders' Association that his department should furnish builders with copies of plans of proposed Government works, at actual cost price, the deposit so made to be refunded to each builder who sends in a bona fide tender. This system was adopted by the City Council some time ago and is giving satisfaction. The Minister is unable to agree to another request by the Association that builders should also bo supjdied with copies of the quantities of Government jobs as worked out by the - experts of 'the department.

The clanging of the firebell, opposite to the Town Hail, and the reflection of the strong yellow lights in the portico of the hall itself were quite enough to disturb the audience of the Rev. D. C. Bates, who was lecturing in the concert chamber on wild animals last night. Councillor J. P. Luke was presiding, and seeing the makings of a panic and possibly some serious accident arising out of a rush for the doors, did his utmost to quieten the audience and did in part, succe-edl There was a scamper for the doors, however^ and these being ample, and the stairways of the Town Hall liberal in breadth, there was nothing more serious than a little pushing. The remainder of the lecture -was followed by a handful of people, but Mr. Bates brought it quickly to a close. The Mayor desires us to point out that the Town Hall as nearly approaches a "fireproof" building as possible, and that even in the case of an outbreak of fire — which is a remote contingency — a packed audience could promg^ly be got out ,of any part of the building. It has been alleged that A. C. Elliott, whose name has been much in print lately, was in partnership with Mr. T. Duncan (son of the Hon. T. Y. Duncan) and married one of the ex-Min-ister's daughters. We are asked to state that these allegations are without foundation. The Hon. T. Y. Duncan and his family did not hear of A. C. Elliott till various events brought his name into the papers.

"The Playgoer," a journal devoted to plays and players, is a weekly publication of which the first issue is to hand. Sketches of performers appear also.
