PRISONERS SENTENCED FORGERY AND FALSE PRETENCES.

Counsel staled that prisoner had only been in New Zealand since Deccm'ber/1905. Ho was 'first employed by Mr. Hnnnsih, and subsequently took up selling newspapem. Ho got in arrears with his paymcmti», and also with his board. Prisoner candidly iiclmjtted lhat ho had gone into Mr. .Hannah's factory with a view to "getting something." He found a chequo for a largo •iimourit,' qnd bought a piano, whidh', of course, was never delivered. A bahinco of £17 10s- was found in his possession when he was arrested. Ilis Honour did not see his way to accedeto counsel's application, that prisoner should be admitted to probation. He would bo sentenced to six months' imprisonment. An ' order was m'ado for tho return of the money found in prisoner's possession when ho was arrested. Charles' Burney, alias Eaddington/v.ho had pleaded guilty to (1) forgery and uttering, and (2) sending a, fnlso telegram had nothing -to say in extenuation of his offence. His Honour said prisoner had previously been convicted three times for fulso pretences and onco for theft. Ho would be sentenced to twelvo mouths' imprisonment on the first, charge nnd six- month's on tho second, sentences to run cononrranllv. Thomas Henderson, alias James Bushbridge, on two charges of forgery and uttering, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment.. His Honour said prisoner, had been guilty of a mean ofTencc. He had taken a fellow-boarder's Post Oflico Savingß Bank deposit book, impersonated him, and drawn upon hk account. Another confessed chargo of. forgery on the part of Frederick K. Newman, alias- Winter, was punished by the imposition of a sentence of twelvo months' imprisonment. Prisoner was convicted at Wanganui in January last of theft. His Honour said he- could not, in view of this fact, lightly overlook the present case.
