PETONE AND HUTT.

SUBURBAN MATTERS. HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Hutt Borough Council was 'hold last evening, the Mayor (Mr. T. A. Peterkm), piesuling. There -were also proisont : — Councillors O'Sullivan, Judd, Baldwin, Hollard, Russell, Wildsmith, and Hodgins. Now that the weather was suitable, tlia owners of the Kilrymont Estate applied to have their footpaths tarred. Tha council decided to commence the work early iv the New Year. The chairman ot the Rivor Board drew attention to the condition of the approaches to the bridge over tho Ilutt river. Tha Mayor reported that the necessary repairs had since been effected. Messrs. Young and Tripe, solicitors, forwarded a compensation claim of £45 by Mr. N. Sladdcn in respect to the dedication of 8.3 perches, parb of section Ko. 21 Waiwetu-road. After a short discussion tho council resolved to formally deny any liability and to obtain the opinion of the borongh solicitors thereon. It was reported by the Borough eolici- . tors that the draft agreement in connection with the new bridge over the Hutt river was now in order, .excepting that a proviso should be added providing for the stipulated contribution of the council and its share of the upkeep. The council decided not to pay its share £-300 until the agreement had been signed, and also that tho proviso 'be 6ent to the City Council for insertion. The delay on the part of the ValuerGeneral's office in notifying further alterations to tho Valuation Roll was adversely criticised. The Mayor pointed oub that such alterations when not promptly notified greatly hampered the work of the Town Clerk. The council passed a resolution to tjie effect that the Government be informed of the delay, and it was decided to approach the Executive of the Municipal Society, ask* ing it to take the matter in hand. The decisions of the conference ro the Hutt Park Act were confirmed. Considerable discussion look place regarding the charges for river shingle supplied by Mesivs. Pitcaithly and Co. .Several Councillors spoke strongly on the matter and considered it' outrageous that the River Board in letting the contract had not made provision for a supply of metal to the Borough Council. •It was, they cpnbidered, another in» stance showing the advisability of abolishing the River Board. The Town Clerk produced a letter from the lessees of the shingle beache6, naming 4d as the rate to tho council, and it was decided to pay only that amount. The use of the Recreation Ground was granted to the United Friendly Societies on 12th January, and to the employees of .Messrs. One engine was ready for running and the other nearly so. Both sets of producer plants were ready for charging. The lamp authorised for Normandale had been erected, and the one in tihe main street opposite Council Chambers taken down. The main in Bridge-street, was laid down and 1170 feet lineal of 4 inch main was laid in Waiwetu-road, and a 3 inch main taken across from Rive 1 * Bank-road to the enginehouse. Mr. Wakenmn contended that if Single-tax was adopted it would enormously increase the renfca of agricultural land, and consequently people in tho town would havo to pay great prices for the farmers' produce. Mr. Jacobsen also argued that Single-tax would be inimical to the interests of the people of New Zealand. Mr. Evans, in yc-plying' to Mr. Wake-ham, stated that if people would look into the official year book and see how much taxation was paid at present they would find that in most instancea it amounted to more than it would bo if Single-tax was law.
