Tha vacancy occurred through the elevation to the peerage of Sir James Kitson, who had represented tho division for many years. At the last general election the I ' sitting member was unopposed, but at tho 1900 poll the Consarvative candidate was boaten by only 523 votes in a straight-out contest, whereas now the Unionist has secured less than a third of the total votes polled.
