OVERCROWDING OF TRAMS.

The present unsatisfactory position of affairs from the point of view of the man who is left standing in the street while a tram dashes past received a little further explaining before' *Mr. Dyer, S.M., in the Police Couit this morning. Phillip John Whitohoase, motorman, and James M'Donald, conductor, were proceeded against by John Turner, Auckland- city traffic inspector, for infringing one, of the by-law 3by proceeding past a fit'opping-place where a number of prospective passenger,? weis waiting, without bringing the car to a standstill, tho car being at the time not occupied by the lull number of pisseugers for which it was licensed. < Mr. Mays, who defended, admittcl that the car parsed a> was alleged. The defence would be bused on the merits of the cace. John Turner stated that on 10th July, at 4.25 p.m., car 64, bound for Ponaonby, passed tho stopping place at Victoria Arcade without pulling up, in 3pite of the fact that a number of would-be passenger^ were waiting there, and that the car was not nearly full. , Mr. ilays: You know that the stop-ping-places have recently been altered? — Yes.
